The Importance of the Cannabis Mother Plant

In honor of Mother’s Day, we will be focusing on the cannabis mother plant and the importance of this in any cannabis garden.

Mother plants play a crucial role in cannabis cultivation, particularly in producing high-quality and consistent cannabis plants. Mother plants are genetically stable female cannabis plants that are grown specifically for the purpose of cloning.

Cloning is a technique used in cannabis cultivation to create new plants that are genetically identical to the mother plant. It involves taking a cutting or a clone from the mother plant and rooting it in a growing medium, such as soil or hydroponics. This allows growers to propagate the same genetics and characteristics of the mother plant.

One of the primary benefits of using mother plants is that they allow growers to maintain a consistent genetic profile in their cannabis garden. By using clones from a single mother plant, growers can ensure that all of their plants will have the same traits, such as potency, flavor, and yield. This is especially important for commercial growers who want to produce a consistent product for their customers.

Mother plants also provide a reliable source of healthy and robust clones. By selecting a healthy and strong mother plant, growers can ensure that the clones they produce will also be healthy and robust. This can help to reduce the risk of pests, diseases, and other issues that can affect the quality of the plants.

Another benefit of using mother plants is that they allow growers to save time and money. Instead of starting from seeds, which can take several weeks to germinate and grow, growers can take clones from a mother plant and have them ready to transplant within a few days. This can help to speed up the growing process and reduce the time and resources required to grow new plants.

To maintain healthy and productive mother plants, growers need to provide them with the right environment and care. This includes providing them with a balanced nutrient solution, maintaining the proper temperature and humidity levels, and ensuring that they receive adequate lighting.

Cannabis mother plants play a crucial role in cannabis cultivation by providing a reliable source of genetically stable clones. By using clones from a single mother plant, growers can ensure that their plants will have consistent traits and produce a high-quality product. With the right care and attention, mother plants can be a valuable asset to any cannabis garden.

The HISSSStory of 420

A quick lesson on the hisssssstory of FUR20 (420)

Ever wondered where the term and holiday of 420 came from? The hisstory of 420 in cannabis culture is somewhat meowsterious and debated. The origins of 420 as a term associated with cannabis use can be traced back to a group of high school students in San Rafael, California in the early 1970s.

The story goes that in the fall of 1971, a group of furriends who called themselves the "Waldos" used the code "420" as a shorthand fur their plan to meet at 4:20 PM near a statue of Louis Pasteur on the grounds of their school to search for a rumored abandoned cannabis crop. They would remind each other in the hallways of their school, "420 Louis!" to remind each other of their plan.

Although they never found the crop, the term "420" stuck as a code word for cannabis use, and the Waldos began to use it as a way to refurr to their shared interest in smoking cannabis.

Over time, the term "420" spurread beyond the original group of furriends and became a cultural refurrence point for cannabis users around the world. Today, April 20th (4/20) is celebrated as a holiday of sorts by cannabis enthusiasts, and many use the term "420" as a code word for cannabis use.

Stop in this week for Meowy Jane’s FUR20 celebration! We will be offurrring discounts and games to win purrrizes.

See Mew Soon!

How Cannabis Can Improve Mood

Are you feline blue? Need something to get you out of the litter box of a bad mood? Look no further than cannabis! This paw-some plant has been shown to have mood-boosting properties that can really whisker you away to a happier place.

As a cat lover, I know that our feline friends have an uncanny ability to lift our mood and make us feel better. But did you know that cannabis can also have mood-enhancing effects? In this blog post, we'll take a look at how cannabis can improve mood, with some purrfectly punny cat refurrences along the way.

Furrst, let's talk about the two main compounds found in cannabis: THC and CBD. THC is the psychoactive compound that purroduces the "high" feeling, while CBD is non-psychoactive and has a range of potential therapeutic benefits. Both THC and CBD interact with the body's endocannabinoid system, which plays a role in regulating mood, stress, and anxiety.

One study published in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that THC may impurrove symptoms of depurression by increasing serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter that regulates mood, and low levels of serotonin have been linked to depurression. CBD, on the other hand, has been shown to have potential anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) effects. A study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology found that CBD may reduce symptoms of social anxiety disorder.

When THC and CBD are used together, they can create a synergistic effect that enhances their therapeutic benefits. A study published in the Journal of Pain found that a combination of THC and CBD was more effective at reducing pain in patients with neuropathic pain compared to THC alone. Another study published in the Journal of Psychopharmacology found that a combination of THC and CBD was more effective at reducing anxiety in patients with social anxiety disorder compared to THC alone.

So, what does all of this have to do with cats? Well, just like how our furry friends can brighten our day with their playful antics, cannabis may also be able to lift our mood and help us feel better. Of course, we're not suggesting that you give your cat cannabis - that's a big no-no! But fur humans, cannabis may be able to purrovide some extra cattitude when we're feline down.

It's impawsible not to feel better after spending some quality time with a furry feline furiend, but cannabis may just be the extra whisker on top! Of course, it's impurrtant to use cannabis responsibly and to start with low doses. Remember, when it comes to cannabis use, safety should always be your top purriority.

In conclusion, whether you're feeling a little blue or just looking for some extra cattitude, cannabis may be able to help you claw your way back to a happier, healthier state of mind. So why not give it a try? Who knows, you might just end up feline fantastic!

Meowy Jane Purrthday Weekend!

ICYMI: Meowy Jane’s first Purrthday/annifurrsary weekend round up!

ICYMI: Meowy Jane Purrtland celebrated her 1 year annifurrsary/purrthday this past weekend!

On Friday, March 17, Meowy Jane Purrtland marked her one year anniversary of being open! Last year, we kicked off our grand opening on St. Catty’s Day, and this year, we stepped it up and celebrated all weekend long in the Old Port!

This was a big milestone for the Meowy Jane crew. Last years long awaited grand opening came after a rough 3.25 years of renting and preparing the space to open. Between the unknowns in licensing, regulations and then the unexpected pandemic, it felt like we were never going to open!

For those of you who may not know, Meowy Jane has been growing cannabis in the Maine Medical market for almost a decade now. As the tides shifted in the world of cannabis, our dreams of opening an adult-use cannabis boutique suddenly didn’t seem so far fetched. After hunting for the best possibly location for our store, we officially signed our lease for our Old Port location in January of 2019 and began planning.

We are so proud of the last year and all we have accomplished. We have learned so much and feel a renewed sense of excitement and progress going into this new year. The Meowy crew continues to provide expertise, guidance, acceptance and kindness to all who come through the door in search of cannabis. Having envisioned this store for many years, I feel so much pride in the incredible team I have here. There would be no Meowy Jane Purrtland without these kitties.

Meowy spent the weekend celebrating in Portland with Maisie the kitty from the Animal Welfare Society, the Grav guy from Zero Gravity Cannabis, custom cookies and treats from Two Fat Cats Bakery, the newly minted Meowy Purrize Meowchine and all kinds of fun deals.

Whether you are just visiting Portland, Maine or a local resident, we want to thank you for all your support this past year. We look forward to seeing you again soon! Until then, enjoy some photos!

Cannabis 101!

Cannabis Basics

Cannabis 101

The basics:

Indica vs Sativa vs Hybrids, what’s the difference?

·     Effects: These terms can be descriptive words for the effects of a specific strain, but don’t necessarily mean everyone will feel the same! They’re an easy place to start for most new users to get an idea of what they are trying to feel and experience. However, they are not an end all be all when it comes to describing a strain.

·     Genetics: We can also describe how a plant grows using indica and sativa. Different genetics cause a plant to have different shaped leaves, be taller/skinnier, or be different colors. Plants can also show genetic characteristics of one type, but give the effects of the opposite. Because of this, the indica/sativa description can cause confusion for some, and many believe it should be phased out as a description of effects. The graphic below shows some of the physical

Cannabinoids!

THC, CBD, CBG, CBN, you might have heard of some of these before. They are the chemicals in cannabis that interact with the body’s endocannabinoid system and give different strains some of their unique properties. There’s a plethora of information out to learn about each specific one, and more cannabinoids are being discovered every day by scientists around the world. Since this is Cannabis 101, we’re going to go over the two most prevalent in recreational cannabis; THC and CBD.

THC molecule

THC:

THC, or tetrahydrocannabinol, is the most widely known of the cannabinoids. What most people call “THC” is actually either Delta-9 THC or THC-A. THC-A is the acidic form of THC that has not been decarboxylated. Decarboxylation is what happens when heat up a chemical and it turns into something else. So smoking, cooking, or vaping flower turns the THC-A into Delta-9 THC, then when consumed the Delta-9 THC interacts with the endocannabinoid system and gives us the sought after effects that we feel when consuming cannabis.

That was probably a lot of science talk, but it’s important to know the chemicals and how they work to best understand testing contents on packaging.

CBD:

Cannabidiol is another very important compound found in cannabis. Although it’s less prevalent in adult-use recreational cannabis, it is highly sought after for its medical benefits and is very popular among beginners. Although CBD doesn’t have any psychoactive effects, it has the potential to help many people with inflammation and anxiety.

Types of products:

Flower:

Buds! On cannabis menus flower refers to the loose buds most people think of when referring to cannabis. It is incredibly versatile, since most other forms of consumption start here! Flower is dried and cured before packaging for specific amounts of time depending on strain and growing conditions so it is at its peak and ready for people to enjoy!

Concentrates:

This is a pretty broad term, and can cover everything from vape carts to any dabbable solid. There are an enormous variety of names they go by and extraction methods companies use. The names they use are usually descriptors that can give a lot of insight into the product. For example, anything with the term “Live” in front of it was originally extracted from flash frozen flower, instead of cured. Other names can be textural, like sugar, wax, or shatter.. They describe the consistency of the product; sugar has a crystalline structure that looks, well, like sugar. Specific extraction methods can either be part of the name, or listed somewhere else on the packaging. Popular methods include Rosin, which is solventless and uses a heat press, BHO, which uses butane, and EHO or Ethanol. You’ll see many of these terms used for vape cartridges as well, which are similar but in an easy to use, disposable container used with a battery for heating.

Edibles:

Edibles are pretty easy to explain, they’re anything food related! Dosage and the type of concentrate that companies use can make things a little more complicated to understand, but most people get the basics. The most important thing to stress with those who are new to edibles is LOW AND SLOW. You’ll hear this phrase thrown around a lot, but that’s because it’s true. Everyone’s body processes cannabis differently, so dosage is incredibly personal and can take some trial and error to find what works. We always recommend users start very low because otherwise people can have adverse effects that can turn them off of cannabis altogether!

Topicals:

Topicals are anything that is used externally on the skin. Most popularly they are seen as salves or lotions, but can also be things like lip balm, bath bombs, or other various scrubs and oils. Topicals are popular among people because they can have localised pain relief without any cannabinoids entering their bloodstream. This means THC will not provide a psychoactive effect, and it can be used all day without impairing any cognitive function.

Sometimes Transdermal products are added into this category, because they are placed on the skin, but they do actually enter

the bloodstream and will give a psychoactive effect. They work similarly to a nicotine patch, where a sticky patch is applied to the skin and the product is absorbed over a length of time. They work well for guests that can’t ingest or inhale, but still want the therapeutic effects of cannabis.

Tinctures:

Tinctures are extracted cannabis oils that are suspended in either oil or alcohol and packaged in a bottle with a dropper. MCT oil, otherwise known as Multi-chain triglyceride or fractionated coconut oil, is most popular as it has virtually no taste and is easy to ingest. Alcohol is sometimes used, but most people prefer MCT tinctures. Alcohol can be a good option if someone would like to disguise their tincture in another drink, but otherwise it can sometimes create a burning sensation in the mouth or throat if taken alone. It is recommended that guests hold the tincture in their mouth for 60-90 seconds for the best/fastest effects. This is because it can be absorbed sublingually (under the tongue) or through the other mucus membranes in the mouth. If the taste is too much for someone to handle, they can swallow it normally but the effects will take longer since it is being digested instead of absorbed. Tinctures are also popular because being able to dose by drop can create a more specific dose than in a traditional edibles.

(Inhalation) Consumption methods

Smoking:

Pretty easy to understand, you light it on fire and inhale the smoke. Smoking is definitely the most popular form of consumption, but it may not be the best for everyone. It’s one of the fastest ways to feel effects, since the cannabinoids are absorbed through the lungs and go straight into the bloodstream. Bongs, pipes, and bubblers are some devices people can use to smoke and each has pros and cons. Bongs and bubblers have water filtration that some believe give a smoother hit, but are larger and more cumbersome than a simple pipe. Joints (and blunts), whether hand-rolled or pre-rolled, are also extremely popular. They’re faster as far as prep time goes and allow for a larger portion to be smoked at once, where a pipe or bong may have to be filled multiple times to get desired effects. Some people feel that joints are harsher on their throat and lungs because of the paper used, especially when rolled into a blunt using tobacco leaf. Of course there are more natural alternatives, like rice papers or hemp leaf wraps. But as with everything, it’s a personal preference.

Electric Vaporizers:

Vaporizing has similar benefits to smoking, but the process eliminates some of the harmful carcinogens from using a flame to heat up the flower. Vaping essentially bakes the flower at a specific temperature to release cannabinoids, but not to burn as much plant matter. There are hundreds of different devices on the market, some as low as $50 and as high as $500. Obviously quality and performance are a factor, but for most it's personal preference and customizability. The effects of vaporizing can also be different from flower; some feel it is not as intense and has a different flavor profile. You can also purchase electric vaporizers for loose concentrate (dabs). These offer users a way to consume concentrates with less mess and less chance of burning yourself with a torch or hot nail.

Vapor Cartridges:

Cartridges can be a very controversial subject, especially as of late. In general, vape cartridges are super convenient and easy to use for almost everyone. They provide discretion from low-odor vapor and are easy to dose for low-tolerance users. They also come in a multitude of strains, flavors, and strengths which makes them a good option for many different types of user. Vapor Cartridges do need a secondary device, referred to as a battery, to heat the oil in the cartridge and create the vapor. Cartridge hardware has a built in atomizer, which is the heating element and the battery powers that atomizer. There are tons of different types of batteries and cartridges, and not all are compatible, so it is important to be familiar with the type of cartridges we carry and what batteries are needed to power each one.

Dab/Oil Rigs

Dab Rigs are basically bongs that have a special attachment for vaporizing loose concentrates. A special bowl is used that can withstand super high heats to properly vaporize the concentrate. There are a few different styles of this bowl; A banger (sometimes called a honeypot) is a bucket shaped piece that is usually made of quartz glass. Regular borosilicate or similar glass cannot withstand the heats used and will shatter or crack on use. You can also get ceramic or titanium attachments as well, usually in a nail style. Nails have flat tops or a small round reservoir with a hollow middle. Quartz is usually preferable, but all three can withstand the heats needed. To acquire the required temperature, a torch or electric attachment is needed. A butane or propane torch is cheapest, but the timing and flame level can be hard for some guests to master. An electric nail can be a good way to eliminate the guesswork, but will run much more expensive. Once the nail/banger is at the desired temperature, a small bit of concentrate is placed on the surface while inhaling simultaneously. You can also “cold start” with a carb cap (a small cap that fits on top of a banger) and a banger by dropping the concentrate in first, placing the cap on top, and heating from below until vapor starts to form. This method does not work for all concentrate and rig types, and usually takes some practice before mastering, so it’s not for beginners.

Terpenes

What is a Terpene?

Terpenes are the chemicals in plants that give taste and smell. They are what makes different strains of cannabis smell and taste so different from each other. You’ll recognize most flavors as being present in other herbs and fruits we use on a regular basis. They can also have some influence on effect, and many believe that the combination of terpenes with cannabinoids in cannabis (sometimes called the entourage effect) is what makes it so therapeutic. Below is a graphic that goes over the taste/smell profiles of the most prevalent terpenes as well as the effects they can create.

These were created by my cousin, so they have a special place in my heart. They are wonderful if you have children of any age that you’re shopping for. Each card is hand designed and painted with daily affirmations to help children embody each of these powerful affirmations to empower themselves through building a positive mindset. These cards are also great for little ones and can be used as flashcards for learning animals. This deck also comes with a booklet that has games and lots of educational information about each animal in the deck! Definitely a gift my daughter loves and has grown with for years now1

Chelse’s Pick:

Cannabis - Pumpkin Spice Latte Bar by Pot + Pan. Get the basic bitch in your life what they really want - a Pumpkin Spice Latte Chocolate Bar… with a twist. This bar is a 1:1 with 10mg of THC and 10mg of CBD per square. The effects of this PSL are effective at getting you to reach that zen state needed for dealing with the family during the holidays. Also, delicious AF.

Non cannabis - Katherine Stuart 14k gold pot leaf studs. Katherine Stuart makes such beautiful, simple pieces that add the perfect touch to any outfit. The tiny pot leaf earrings specifically are my fave - a subtle way to tell the cousins you’re down to “take a walk” before that holiday meal.

Claire’s Pick:

Cannabis - ATF pre-rolls by Divine Buds. This legendary sativa that’s dominant in Myrcene. This strain is sure to give you a euphoric, uplift. Need to stay up all night for present wrapping? This is the strain for you! Also, ATF stands for Alaskan Thunder Fuck, and if that’s not enough of a reason to buy it, I don’t know what is.

Non -cannabis - NOAT.co pulse point essential oils. These are small batch oils, ethically sources, vegan based and can be gifted to anyone as they’re considered unisex. Every scent is rich and unique, and will leave you smelling delicious the entire day from this roll on fragrance. The favorite in the bunch though would have to be Gnosis. This scent is described as “rich and earthy, with layers of warmth and spice. It finishes off with a fresh breeze of citrus and pepper”. Sounds like the perfect holiday scent to us!

Head:  Bergamont

Heart:  Clove, myrrh

Base:  Sandalwood, oakmoss and cedarwood

Jamie’s Pick:

Cannabis - Wynk. Wynk’s are probably my top favorite gift for the Holidays! Not only are they great to bring in a pack to a family gathering, but they also make the perfect stocking stuffer. They’re able to be enjoyed by most, as they are a microdose - so safe for newbies, too! The effects are quick (15 minute onset) and very chill. We describe the feeling as that relaxing body buzz you get after sitting in hot tub.

Non-cannabis - Any of the My Bud Vases - These gorgeous bongs speak for themselves, and would certainly be a jaw-dropper for anyone receiving one as a gift. No matter what style you chose, these make a great centerpiece for the table and can easily be disguised as a flower vase in case grandma isn’t down with the ganj.

Holly’s Pick:

Cannabis - Han Solo Burger . The force is strong with this one!  When I need a need functional but potent, unique yet somehow still familiar terpy strain, this is definitely MY right hand.  This strain offers the heady pick-me-up and easy-going body high  I cherish in any hybrid, and with it’s legendary lineage, the only downside is how quickly I go through it.

Non-cannabis - OCB rolling papers. Do we really need to say why these make a great gift? A classic, and functional accessory for any canna lover on your list. Distillate vs Hash Rosin Edibles: What Gives?

Edibles are one of the most popular items in any adult-use cannabis dispensary. Most edibles are made with distillate or hash rosin, but whats the difference? Read on to find out!

Edibles have taken the cannabis market by storm, appealing to a wide variety of consumers. Almost any dispensary you enter in 2022 will have a selection of edibles from gummies, to chocolates and even drinks. These edibles will vary in doses, whether you are a microdoser at a 2.5mg, or are someone with a higher tolerance (eh hem, looking at those of you who chug a whole 100mg drink to the face), you’ll likely find something that fits your particular needs wherever you go. Long gone are the days of eating some sketchy homemade brownie hoping you don’t accidentally end up out of your mind hours later.

Hash rosin based edibles, made by local company The Hashery!

One of the biggest differences, aside from dose, will be what concentrate is used to make the edibles. At the moment, there are two main categories for edibles that we carry: hash rosin and distillate based. I find that a lot of consumers are not familiar with different modes of dosing in edibles, so I’m here to write a quick article on some of the main questions we get asked about in our day to day here at Meowy Jane.

The most popular product used in edibles is most likely distillate. But what is distillate? And what are some of the pros and cons to this type of product? Distillate is a high-concentration extract that is produced by extracting the THC molecule from flower and other compounds of the plant using ethanol or co2. Distillate is relatively easy to make, cheaper to produce (you can use trim to make distillate, instead of whole bud), and more predictable than other forms of extract (i.e. distillate can be up to 99% THC as an end result). This means that edibles made with distillate are generally cheaper for the end-user, and more easily dosed to a specific milligram during the production process making distillate edibles the workhorse of the edible market. Distillate edibles are great choice for pain, sleep and a variety of other ailments that will promise to work every time in a predictable way! Another pro of using distillate in edibles is that it is generally tasteless, making it easier to create a delicious tasting product without needing to mask the taste or smell. So, sounds super duper great, but what are some of the cons of using distillate? Well, as many know, cannabis is a complex plant, containing hundreds of compounds like cannabinoids, terpenes, flavonoids and essential oils. All of these compounds combined create the well-rounded, dynamic experience (sometimes called the entourage effect) that cannabis provides when in its natural flower form. When it’s distilled down to just THC, all of those other benefits that cannabis provides are lost in the process. Another reaction some my report is the sensation of a more jittery/anxious head high and one that comes on quick and drops off fast. No matter what, though, distillate made edibles are probably the most common and best selling edibles we have in store!

The next most popular edible option are those made with hash rosin. These edibles are highly coveted and a bit harder to find in the market than their counterparts. Hash rosin is produced without a solvent, by simply using pressure, heat and cold. Rosin is additionally made from a plant that is flash frozen at harvest (hence the term “live” rosin), preserving the trichomes containing the cannabinoids and terpenes. The flower is then put in an ice water bath and agitated to knock off the trichomes and create a concentrated form of hash. The benefits of using hash rosin in edibles is the argument that you are getting the full spectrum of compounds of each strain/plant, creating an experience that is unique to each plant. The effects of eating hash rosin edibles will be more nuanced and closer to the effects you would get from smoking a specific strain. Some say the effects of a hash rosin edible are more of a full-body, euphoric experience. However, the process of making rosin is more time consuming and, in turn, more expensive for the end user. Another drawback of hash rosin edibles, is the relatively unpredictable nature of dosing, as it’s much harder to make a specific dose (i.e 5mg per gummy) since hash rosin’s THC content is usually around 60-80%, sometimes you may end up somewhere outside of that dose you were aiming for. Lastly, food grade hash rosin will also have a much stronger “weed” taste than distillate, meaning the end result may not be as tasty. There is no doubt, though, that hash rosin edibles are a highly desired, top shelf product that is certainly worth trying if you haven’t dabbled yet!

Overall, each product has its benefits and drawbacks, and there is a place in the market for each! I would always recommend consumers try and compare each product to see what they prefer, based on tolerance, effect preference and past experiences. As always, we are here to help guide you at Meowy Jane, so stop on by and let us show you our awesome selection of products! Or click here to see what we currently have in stock!
